Ailing Empire : Germany from Bismark to Hitler
Its a pity this book is currently not available in English. I have read this book in German, and found it to be an excellent eye-opener to a catastrophe that began to unfold more than 80 years ago. The catastrophe that ended for Europe, and many other parts of the world, in total chaos and has reshaped the world to lay the foundation of our current international political structure, still holds a mixture of fascination and horror for many a historical minded person. - My grandparents and parents have suffered through the anxiety and often horrors of both world wars and their descriptions I will never forget. However, I often ask myself what was it that actually lead to this tragedy that actually started around 1914. What factors prepared a person like Hitler to have such a far reachiung influence? What psychological background in the societies of those times laid the foundation to the course of things. After all what happened in Germany was no exception in those times. The preparations for war, the elimination of so-called undesirable people, the persecution of humans, etc. was something that was practiced in all countries. Countries like France and Britain did it in their colonies, Russia and China against their own people, or turned it against their neighbors. Only in Germany it was pusued with particular systematic fervor. - All this was possible in highly sophisticated societies, and when it all came into the open people were understandibly very disturbed: why did this happen? The haunt of these events still has not lost its grip on our imagination, and its still practiced in countries that as of yet have not come full circle with these experiences. It can be argued that it is our responsibility to come to terms with this past, to learn from the mistakes and set a new future trend. - However, forbidding inconvenient political parties, political crimes, or touting political correctness, etc. alone won't do it. We have to understand why people want to do this, and at at what point are they ready to take action in the most atrocious way. It has to do with soulsearching each nations history and more so each culture's individual psyche when it comes under pressure, when it is subjected to increased political and economic uncertainty. Are we preparing our children to avoid a catastrophe that came full circle by the end of World War II? - Please read this book, it is written excellently, by a master in language. And ask yourself, try to see parallels in political history in countries other than Germany - recognize these patterns and do something - otherwise you maybe next in line. History has a tendency to repeat itself for those who ignore its lessons - politicians, teachers, parents and other leaders, take heed.

Air War Europa: America's Air War Against Germany in Europe and North Africa 1942-1945: Chronology
Published in Hardcover by Pacifica Military History (June, 1994)
Author: Eric M. Hammel
Average review score:

E. Hammel provides "The" Chronology of the European Air War!
Eric Hammel provides an excellent reference source to the European Air War. The main body of the text chronicals events from war's beginning to Germany's surrender on May 9, 1945. The basic concept is straightforward: to provide a basic sketch of daily operations in Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa. Of particular note is Hammel's Introductory chapter, where he examines the evolution of American fighter doctrine (particularly as it relates to the "Self-defending bomber") and his pinpoint analysis of America's strategic bombing initiative. Despite its obviously reference orientation, nothing Hammel writes makes for dry reading. recommended! Airbridge to Berlin: The Berlin Crisis of 1948, Its Origins and Aftermath
Published in Paperback by Presidio Pr (July, 1988)
Authors: Robert E. Griffin and D. M. Giangreco
Average review score:

Das Beste der Luftbrücke
"The Chocolate Flyer" to the "Eye of the Storm," are far from the extent of information in this book. You are not thrown into the beginning of the airlift without any clue how you got there. The authors show you the "Road to Confrontation" from both the side of the Western Allies and of the UdSSR. The politics, economics and dynamics of the Berlin Blockade and Airlift are clarified with out the feel of a textbok. All together, it is quite enjoyable reading and filled with photographs and accounts of the actual people involved. The lives and hardships of the Berliners as well as the relationships formed between the pilots and the people give the book a realistic touch. No longer will the Berlin Crisis be just a page on the history books.

Aircraft of the Luftwaffe Fighter Aces/Book 1: A Chronicle in Photographs (Schiffer Military/Aviation History)
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (October, 1995)
Author: Bernd Barbas
Average review score:

Both volumes are wonderful photo references
Both volumes are wonderful photo references (and updated from the original Kookabura issues) and contain the bulk of the existing photos of the aircraft of the Luftwaffe Aces. There's not a lot of text. If memory serves correctly, Vol 1 covers JG1-JG51 and Vol 2 covers JG52-JG300. Both are a must for the Jagdwaffe historian. Excellent reference for the aircraft model builder

Aircraft of the Luftwaffe Fighter Aces/Book 2: A Chronicle in Photographs (Schiffer Military/Aviation History)

Excellent image bank from WWII Luftwaffe.
Excellent book. As its own title names: "A Chronicle in Photographs", this publication was not edited to be a technical book but work as an "image bank". The Volume 2 is a continuation of the first Volume, and covers the JGs 53, 54, 77, 300, 301, 302 and 400, plus several profiles with camouflage patterns and a complete Victory List of Luftwaffe pilots which respective rank and awards (this List was not published in the volume 1). As also occurred in the Volume 1, the major photographs were unpublished and of high quality. The color section features 15 good quality original WWII color photographs, including an excellent full page size image from Hans Philipp in front of his Bf 109 (this makes a good reference for both modelers and uniforms collectors). It is, without doubt, a very desirable publication and I strong recommend both Volumes to every Luftwaffe enthusiast.

Albrecht Durer
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (05 October, 1992)
Authors: Jane Campbell Hutchison and Jane Campbell Hutchinson
Average review score:

Excellent peek into the world of Durer
After collecting my 15th Durer book I found a friend who was travelling to Germany and asked for a book IN GERMAN about Durer. The book she brought was actually the book written in english and translated to German. I was delighted! This caused me to reread the english and follow along, as best I could, with the german text. What a pleasure and an underscore to how multitalented and unenjoyed Durer is. From a precocious 12 year old {doing one of the first recognized self portaits} to a traveller of the world, seeker of perspective truth and with humor at his side {read his letters to his friend Pirckhiemer}. Jane C.Hutchinson tells a story worth reading whether you are an artist or just someone who recognizes beauty.

Rewritten/republished as Travel&Leisure:Amsterdam
The American Express Travel Guide of Amsterdam (1992), written by Derek Blythe, has been re-written by Carol Winkelman and re-published as Travel&Leisure: Amsterdam (1997). Travel&Leisure magazine, in conjunction with Macmillan Travel, designed this new version of the book for a larger audience that includes young travelers, budget travelers, babyboomer travelers, discriminating travelers, and business travelers. The new book is a combination of traditional and offbeat travel guide, helping the reader find his/her way to hotels, restaurants, museums, and historical sites while also taking him/her "inside" Amsterdam to experience its cafe culture, lively arts scene, and famous nightlife. The new book, like The American Express Guide, includes an excursion to Rotterdam that leads the reader from the historic to the ultramodern.
