Banking in Transition: East Germany After Unification (Studies in Economic Transition)
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (May, 2000)
Average review score:

Dynamics of banking transitionsI thought the book was interesting and well-written, especially for those of us who are not bankers or in the financial services industry. I gained a better understanding of the banking industry and its role in a market economy. Also, I gained more insight into the difficulties of transitioning from a "centrally planned" economy to a market one. Mr. Robins clearly sheds light on the economic, political, and, more importantly, social and cultural factors involved in the integration of the West and East Germany banking systems. And I think he raises pertinent questions that what works in one place does not necessarily work in another. I would agree with his assessment that some flexibility and customization are necessary. In short, I would recommend his book to anyone interested in the dynamics and challenges of global economics in the 21st century. Because one size definitely does not fit all.

The Baron of Grogzwig
Published in School & Library Binding by Charlesbridge Publishing (September, 1994)
Average review score:

An engaging, beautifully illustrated, wonderful picturebook. The Baron Of Grogzwig is a wonderfully original Charles Dickens ghost story that is adeptly edited into a picturebook format by Shirley Greenway and charmingly illustrated by Rowan Barnes-Murphy. It's the story of young Baron Von Koeldwethout of Grogzwig, Germany, who lives in a fine, old crumbling castle with excellent hunting. But the baron grows discontented with simply doing what he likes every day and decides to get married. He woos the daughter of the Baron Von Swillenhausen and takes up the joys of family life. But by the time he is a fat and hearty forty-eight years of age the baron finds himself saddled with an unhappy wife, thirteen children, and no fortune, feasting, revelry, or hunting! Depressed, the baron decides to end it all. As he sat and thought about his present troubles and the happy days of his bachelorhood, he sees the apparition of the "Genius of Despair and Suicide" before him. Can the baron defeat this ghastly apparition and retain his contented good humor -- or is this the end? An engaging picturebook story, beautifully illustrated and wonderfully told.

The Barque of Saviors: Eagle's Passage from the Nazi Navy to the U.S. Coast Guard
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (16 November, 2001)
Average review score:

Cross the Ocean in MajestyThis book is an absolute "Must" for any sailor or history buff. For landlubbers this is an affectionate account of the beauty and strength of the sea, the men and women who protect our shores and the surprisingly rich but (until now) overlooked history of The Eagle.
The book combines a hard-core sailing voyage with lyrical history; most touching is Drumm's account of Eagle's return to present-day Germany, where the young boys recruited by Hitler's Germany - now old men - reboard their beloved ship and meet today's young crew.

The Battle of Britain: New Perspectives
Published in Paperback by Orion Publishing Co (07 March, 1996)
Average review score:

A view of the battle from the inside looking outJohn Ray's book is in keeping with the excitement and suspense of other accounts of this fascinating battle (the only one in history to be fought completely in the air), but he takes the point of view of Britain's Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander-in-chief of RAF Fighter Command. Ray tells of the inner workings of the RAF, the political battles and clashes of personality that were happening as the battle was being fought and eventually won. It isn't a hagiography of Dowding, but defends his positions and points out his weaknesses. The details on the battle are given as they relate to Dowding's story, without a rigid historical chronology, but containing some terrific anecdotes (such as Dowding's visit to the French Armie de L'Aire headquarters in March of 1940, which helped him make up his mind not to send any more of his fighters to be destroyed in what was obviously a lost cause.
This is a book for those who already know the Battle of Britain and wish to delve deeper into the personalities involed, rather than a complete record of events during the Summer of 1940. It is an intellectual and entertaining look at the Battle from behind the desk of its most tenacious leader.

Bavarian Creme: Memories from Munich Campus
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (November, 2002)
Average review score:

Animal House - EuropeBeing at the University of Maryland's Munich Campus in the 60's was an exciting time in my life. Circe has captured so many wonderful stories of those who were fortunate enough to experience their freshman and/or sophomore years in college. I highly recommend Bavarian Creme to any of the thousands who attended.
The books are extraordinarily well written and contain hundreds of photographs, many of them published for the first time. From his extensive research in Germany and from the files of prominent collectors, the author presents an unparalleled wealth of information, most of which was previously unavailable to the general public.
If, for any reason, I were allowed to keep only few books in my life, I would definitely choose to keep Mr. O'Connor's series. If you are serious about WWI German Aviation, then please get these books as soon as you can.
