Ann Taylor Allen has contributed greatly to our understanding of the role of women in 19th Century Germany. Her Feminism and Motherhood in Germany 1800-1914 offers tremendous insight into the mother-child relationships of that time. Field Uniforms of Germany's Panzer Elite
Published in Hardcover by J J Fedorowicz Pub (15 December, 1998)
Authors: Robert J. Jr. Edwards and Michael H. Pruett
Average review score:

Excellent reference tool
Those who purchased Pruett and Edwards' "Field Uniforms of German Army Panzer Forces in WWII" will be familiar with the comprehensive nature of this title. In this volume, they cover the "everything else" uniforms of the German armed forces such as the Waffen SS, Afrika Korps and Hermann Goring formations. A wealth of contemporary photographs is supplemented by a color section that features uniforms and insignia owned by collectors. The authors include information that allows one to accurately date the appearance of a particular uniform or feature, and this is backed up by footnoted references. This book is an excellent reference tool for memorabilia collectors, figure painters and anyone who is interested in German uniforms of the Second World War.

Fighting for Partnership: Labor and Politics in Unified Germany (Cornell Studies in Political Economy)
Published in Paperback by Cornell Univ Pr (May, 1998)
Author: Lowell Turner
Average review score:

A Fascinating Look at Reunification from Labor's Perspective
Luck placed the author in Germany at the perfect time to chronicle an unprecedented historical event (German reunification), as well as the response of the German Labor Movement. Turner does an excellent job of synthesizing complex issues and events in a way that appeals to both a labor movement novice and an expert. A critical foundation for anyone who wants to understand the issues confronting the European Community, and Germany, today.

Fighting in Normandy: The German Army from D-Day to Villers-Bocage
Published in Hardcover by Greenhill Books/Lionel Leventhal (October, 2001)

First eight days
This book covers the German army from D-day to D+7. Each day begins with an overview by the editor, David C. Isby. The OKW war diary comments on the conflict follow. These summaries are helpful, but the real meat on the coconut are the specific descriptions of the actual German units doing the fighting and the problems they faced as well as successes and failures experienced for each day. Most the the narratives are based on recollections of the officer participants whose rank varied. They are dominated by the general officers, naturally. The volume closes with some overview comments by some of the senior German officers involved in the fighting.
This book is a useful addition to any library concerning the Normandy campaign. Despite the many German units involved, the organization of the material is easy to follow. There are interesting tidbits spread through it as well as some opinions about the quality of the allied forces. No surprise, they didn't think much of the competence of the British leadership although the courage of the British soldiers was admired.
Pride in the German army is evident, and its ability to respond to the invasion described through these dispassionate commentaries is impressive. Example: despite taking the brunt of the attack at Omaha Beach, the 352nd infantry division was still a cohesive entity at the end of the eight days. Even though its losses were terrible, it remained in the line fighting the invaders.

This book deserves more attention
This book has so much to recommend it. The really outstanding thing is the child narrator's voice - it's always exactly appropriate to the child's purported age. Nothing precocious - only what the child could really know and say.

The Final Report on the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials
This report was written by Telford Taylor (who should be credited as the author in Amazon.com's listing) and summarizes the 12 "subsequent" or "American" trials of Germans in 1947-48, which were his responsibility as Chief of Counsel for War Crimes. It is an essential historical document and Wm. Hein deserves credit for reissuing it.

Fine Arms and Armor: Treasures in the Dresden Collection
Published in Hardcover by Putnam (1975)
Author: Johannes Schobel
Average review score:

"Sheer artistic exhuberance"
Dresden's Historisches Museum holds one of three great world collections of armor, the other two being in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna and the Real Ameria, Madrid. Schobel and Karpinski are to be highly congratulated for this fine work that contains stunning full-page color plates plus black-and-white photos with superlative tonal gradations, a total of 180 illustrations. Each chapter is followed by generously annotated notes and precise historical identifications of pieces collected between the 16th and 18th centuries and that belonged to great European families. Recommended for any library by reason of sheer artistic exhuberance, or for the true connoisseur and collector of arms and armor.

Social Studies Review
I really enjoyed this book. It taught me a lot about what happened to the German people during World War 11. I liked how it was blunt about what happened to the people instead of beating around the bush. I really liked the character Lisel Spann because I can relate to her easily. I liked how she worked hard even when things weren't going good. I really enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to everyone because it is the kind of book that has you laughing one minute and crying the next.
