A Frog Prince
Published in School & Library Binding by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (November, 1989)
Average review score:

Oh Mommy, Read it Again! Is what our daughter exclaimed after we read her this book for the first time. The illustrations are Chris Van Allsburg (SP?) quality, the pace is just right for an attentive 3 to 4 year old. The frog keeps a steady moral high ground in both thought and deed while searching for the princess who is right for him. The end is quite a surprize, if only because of our preconceptions of the standard frog prince tale.

From Berlin (Topographics)
Published in Paperback by Real Digital (August, 1997)
Average review score:

if you are interested in either WW2 or Berlin, READ THIS!Armando is a Dutch writer and artist who grew up near a concentration camp. He has been fascinated by the War his entire life. This book is very unusual - part journal, part transcriptions of interviews with elderly people in Berlin, part historical commentary. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone who is interested in either WW2 or Berlin. I've never read anything at all like it. Couldn't put it down.

From Caligari to California: Erich Pommer's Life in the International Film Wars
Published in Hardcover by Berghahn Books (July, 1998)
Average review score:

One of the most important books on German film producers. This critical history of the German producer of THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, THE BLUE ANGEL, and other classic works of German cinema is a model of historical research and writing. Erich Pommer, whose career spanned five decades in the filmmaking centers of Berlin, Paris, London, and Hollywood, was not just a financier of films, he was also a creative producer. Not only was he there at the beginning of German's rise to international promenence in the film world in the 1920s, he was also - as Films Control Officer in the U.S. Army - repsonsible for the reconstruction of the German film industry after World War II. In between he spent years in London and Hollywood. His biography is therefore exemplary as a portrait of German cinema in its Expressionist heydey, as well as Hollywood in the golden age of the 1930s and 1940s, and post-World War II German cinema. Having access to the estate papers of Erich Pommer, as well as thoroughly researching contemporary trade periodicals and the daily press, Ursula Hardt has written an extremely readable and enjoyable book. In particular, she has been able to combine Pommer's personal history with the institutional histories of the giant UFA Film Combine, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, RKO, and other film companies in Hollywood and abroad, that have shaped film history. A must for anyone interested in German film history and the history of German Jewish refugees in the Hollywood film industry. Jan-Christopher Horak Director, Munich Filmmuseum

From East Germans to Germans?: The New Postcommunist Elites

Average review score:

Unique insightDr. Yoder's book provides unique insight into the dilemmas and difficulties of a society in transition. By focusing on regional and local elite she gives a glimpse at the nitty gritty of politics in former East Germany. The reader comes away better understanding why it is so difficult for the two states to become one, as well as an appreciation for the dramatic changes that have taken place in the lives of East Germans.

From Schongauer to Holbein: Master Drawings from Basel and Berlin
Published in Paperback by Natl Gallery of Art (September, 1999)
Average review score:

Beautiful! If you are a fan of Northern Renaissance work on paper you will find this book excellent for the price. The printing and the paper are excellent. The drawings are reproduced in color on a fine matte paper which shows off well the chiaroscuro effects and idiosyncratic techniques of these masters. Wish I could have seen the exhibition, but this is the next best thing.

From the Ruins of the Reich: Germany 1945-1949
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (May, 1990)
Average review score:

Phenomenal bookProbably one of the best books on post-war Germany - basically this is about the US Occupation of Nazi Germany. Botting tells tales from the smallest of people to the generals, both American and German. Also interlaced are hardships having to do with coal shortages, food and DPs (Displaced Persons). A fascinating read for anyone who enjoys reading about occupied Germany.

Fuehrer Conferences on Naval Affairs, 1939-1945
Published in Hardcover by Greenhill Books (01 April, 1990)
Average review score:

Necessary reading for the historian and history buff. The Fuehrer Conferences are necessary reading for any historian of naval affairs or World War II. In these documents, Hitler outlines his strategy for preventing food and munitions from being shipped from the neutral countries, predominantly the United States, to Great Britain. The decision on how far to push the United States was a crucial one, as it had helped push the Western giant over the edge in World War I, and Hitler could not afford another powerful enemy. Yet, as Germany's chance of successfully invading Great Britain waned, the need to stop shipments of supplies from neutral countries waxed urgent. There is gripping drama in the documents themselves, and a chance to peer into Hitler's own diplomatic and strategic processes. A wonderful resource and good entertainment.

The Furtwangler Record
Published in Hardcover by Amadeus Pr (November, 1994)
Average review score:

Furtwangler discographyI think this book is useful primarily for classical CD collectors and Furtwangler's fans. It consists of a biography, recordings reviews and a discography. The biography describes Furtwangler's career using historical context. Recordings reviews are grouped by music eras and composers. Reviews cover all available recordings. You can read about performances of every opus, Furtwangler's thoughts from his books and letters concerning music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner and others. It is unique and often previously not published information. And at last you can read a comprehensive review of every recording. I found the reviews useful as it helps to decide whether to buy the recording or not. In Appendix you can find the discography by John Hunt. It covers all available CDs till 1992. LPs are mentioned only if there are no CDs for the item.
